I've had some success using pipe insulation around the trunks and lower branches of small trees to prevent the rubbing.
Interesting idea Shirley. I did use some of those white plastic trunk protectors when the trees were very small but the caliper of most is too large now. The pipe insulation may be more adaptable – thanks
